Allied Health Professionals
Who are Allied Health Professionals?
Footprints Early Childhood Intervention provide a range of support services to help children up to 18-years-old to reach their full potential. They play a crucial role in supporting the development and well-being of children and teenagers. The allied health professionals offered at Footprints include:
Occupational Therapy
Occupational therapy focuses on helping children and teenagers develop, improve, or recover daily living and working skills. Pediatric occupational therapists work with children and teenagers to enhance their ability to perform everyday activities, such as dressing, eating, writing, and playing.
Speech Pathology
Speech pathology focuses on diagnosing and treating communication and swallowing disorders in children and teenagers. Pediatric speech pathologists work with children and teenagers to improve their speech, language, and communication skills.
Psychology
Psychology focuses on the mental health and emotional well-being of children and teenagers. Pediatric psychologists work with children, teenagers and their families to address a range of psychological concerns, including behavioural problems, emotional difficulties, and developmental disorders.
How do Allied Health Professionals work in practice?
In practice, the Allied Health Professional process involves:
Initial Consultation
The process begins with an initial consultation where the therapist meets with the child and their family to discuss the child’s needs and determine the scope of the assessment. This meeting is crucial for understanding the child’s current abilities, challenges, and goals
Assessment
Following the initial consultation, a detailed needs assessment is conducted. This assessment may involve observing the child in their natural environment, such as at home or school, to see how they perform daily tasks. This may include standardised tests related to occupational, speech and psychological concerns.
Planning
Based on the assessment results, the therapist develops a personalised intervention plan. This plan includes short-term and long-term goals, strategies, and activities to improve the child’s skills. The plan is tailored to the child’s individual needs and may involve direct therapy sessions, home practice, and collaboration with other professionals.
Implementation and Monitoring
The therapist works with the child and their family to implement the intervention plan. Regular therapy sessions are scheduled to provide direct support to the child and family. The therapist also monitors the child’s progress and makes adjustments to the plan as needed to ensure the child continues to receive the most effective support.
